Dr Daniela Vergara is part of the Harvest New York Extension Team from Cornell University as an ‘Emerging Crop Specialist’ to help hemp farmers with their crop. Her work on Genetic maps - the arrangement of genes and their particular positions into chromosomes - provides indispensable information about the location of and distances between genes, which then allows for informed breeding decisions that can be used to rapidly combine the desired traits of interest into a single strain. Cannabis has played a major role in agriculture and medicine for several millennia.
Dr Daniela Vergara is an evolutionary biologist, data analyst, educator, scientific writer, and public speaker. She is involved with the hemp and marijuana industries and with academic institutions in order to answer basic biological questions about Cannabis currently unknown to science. She has also been part of the scientific teams at private companies who are global leaders in agricultural testing and biotech.
As the legal cannabis market continues to mature, understanding the cannabis genome will play a major role in cultivation and further understanding its medicinal potential. She founded and directs a non-profit organization, the Agricultural Genomics Foundation (AGF). AGF aims to make hemp and cannabinoid science available to a broad public. Her team, in collaboration with industry experts, scientists and educators have created high-quality, accessible, affordable education for learners of all levels in mind, from novice to expert.
